I planned my future when I was seven: I would be in the drumline at the University of Notre Dame and major in something. Ten years later, I decided to major in music education even though Notre Dame didn't have an education department and no one had ever majored in percussion performance. To me, those were just minor details. I believed so completely in my ability to succeed that I didn't even apply to any other colleges. (Which wasn't a wise decision back then, either!)
During my junior year I was diagnosed with renal failure. When I was rushed to the ER on a Friday afternoon, my family was terrified for my health and I was devastated that I couldn't play at the pep rally or the next day's football game. An eternal optimist determined to succeed, I started dialysis that night and marched two weeks later at the next home game. Throughout the rest of the school year I travelled with the marching band to the Independence Bowl in Louisiana, with the pep band to the Women's Big East Basketball Tournament in New Jersey and the NCAA Tournament in Texas, and with the concert band on a week-long tour of California. (My nurses always loved hearing about my adventures when I got home!)
One of my most defining characteristics is that I don't let obstacles hold me back: I accept the challenge to rise up, adapt, and overcome. My philosophy as an educational coach is to listen to your story, learn about your needs, and help you find solutions that work for your community. If you're ready to build a partnership, set high (yet realistic) expectations, and enjoy the growth process, let's get in touch!
